Additional events are occasionally organised – see Calendar page for details of any in the coming months.
Some previous events
Summer Celebration 2008
60th anniversary of the re-forming of the Society after the Second World War
60 members and friends packed the Royal British Legion Hall on Friday 25th July and were thoroughly entertained by Edwin Rye talking about ‘David Austin Roses’. Mr Rye had brought with him some lovely examples of these roses from his own garden. Those present also enjoyed a buffet supper and a slice of the Society’s birthday cake. The cake, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the re-forming of the Society after World War II, was formally cut by Cllr. Mrs Marilyn Hampton, Chairman of Chorleywood Parish Council.
Winter meetings – 2008
The 3 meetings held during the early months of this year were very well supported and were much enjoyed by members and their guests. We learned about the early days of flower arranging from Mrs Betty Stockwell and the wild flowers of the Chilterns from Dr Brenda Harold. We were also entertained by Mr John Willson, who read extracts from Gilbert White’s ‘A Natural History of Selbourne’ and illustrated these with slides taken in his own garden near High Wycombe
Winter Event – 2007
Over 40 members packed into the Library on 16th February for our winter social evening. After an enjoyable buffet meal, Mr Jim Dale of British Weather Services answered members’ questions about the weather in an inimitably lively and relevant way. Questions ranged widely form the Valley Road ‘frost pocket’ through climate change to jet streams!
