Autumn reports

Saturday 19th September 2015
Once again this was not a large show but there were some good quality exhibits particularly amongst the roses and the vegetables. The weather seems to have been particularly unkind to exhibitors in 2015.
The trophies for most points in the flower and vegetable classes went to Dennis Layzell and Derek Hillier respectively who both had a goodly number of fine exhibits on the show bench. Dennis Layzell also won the cup for most points in the Dahlia classes where he had some particularly fine blooms. John Aves’ huge bunch of grapes easily won the Giffard Cup for best exhibit of fruit. Best exhibit certificates were awarded to Michael Facey for a large well-flowered Fuschia in a pot and Chris Kemp won a similar certificate in the vegetable classes with an exhibit of 9 fresh, straight runner beans.
Catherine Harer’s best exhibit winner arrangement in Floral Art, ‘Seasonal Splendour’ certainly lived up to its name. In the household classes Olwen Morris won the trophy for most points on her return as a serious competitor after several years of absence.
Despite the difficult growing conditions throughout the year the Society managed to stage three successful shows and members will now be hoping for kinder weather in 2016.

Once again the weather interfered with members’ preparations for the show and there were fewer flowers on display than is usual in September. The exception was the dahlia section where there was keen competition particularly between Dennis Layzell and Derek Hillier. Derek won the trophy for the most points in dahlia classes but the margin of his victory was very small. Michael Facey won the certificate for best exhibit in flower classes with his magnificent flowering pot plant.
The large array of vegetables in Division B was of very high standard and Margaret Wesley was the worthy winner of the awards for both vegetables and fruit with a range of excellent exhibits although she was beaten into second place in a number of classes by some that were even better!
Iona Sims’ elegantly beautiful flower arrangements won her the cup for the most points in Floral Art but Catherine Harer’s arrangement ‘Autumn Splendour ‘ really lived up to its title and she was awarded the certificate for best exhibit.
This show brought to a close another year during which our fickle weather did its best to make growing and showing difficult but, as usual, our exhibitors triumphed over both drought and deluge.
The Committee is grateful to all who have supported the shows this year whether as an exhibitor, a visitor or helper and look forward to meeting again for the first show of 2015 on 28th March
